World Voices & Strings
This will be a collaborative evening of soulful African finger-style blues, Balkan polyphonic singing, Indian slide guitar, World percussion and Macedonian woodwinds.

World Voices & Strings

Featuring guitarist, composer, and vocalist Dave Cipriani; world-music percussionist and Topanga local Jamie Papish; and the vocal group Mezecina (co-founded by Topanga-raised Justine Kragen). Mezecina will be joined by Marko Danilovski on woodwinds.

About Dave Cipriani
Dave has decades of experience as a professional musician, composer & band leader of his band Mahadev. He has studied and played with a variety of famous teachers, musical styles and traditions. Dave's diverse background include studies in jazz, balkan/classical/flamenco/African finger style blues guitar, sitar and Indian slide guitar. Dave holds an MFA in North Indian Music at California Institute of the Arts. He has self-produced 4 CDs, and has received awards from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Baltimore Office of Promotions and the Arts.

About Mezecina (meh-zeh-chee-nah)
Mezecina is a Los Angeles-based vocal group featuring Liseli Walan, Justine Kragen, Liana Soll, and Dawn Lunsford, who accompany themselves on percussion, guitar, and mandolin. Together they bring decades of immersion in Eastern European folk music traditions, shaped by a shared history of performing in larger vocal ensembles and direct study with master teachers. Particularly drawn to the mesmerizing rhythms and melodies of the Balkans, they embrace folk music as a blend of new and old traditions: as a living, breathing art form that connects us all.

About Jamie Papish
A veteran percussionist, recording artist, composer, arranger and teacher of 25 years. Jamie specializes in a variety of world & sacred music and percussion styles ranging from Middle Eastern, Turkish, Persian, Sephardic, Yemenite, Ashkenazi  Armenian, Balkan and Kirtan. He has toured the world with the award winning Yuval Ron Ensemble and continues to be a in-demand performer.

About Marko Danilovski
Marko Danilovski is a specialist of the Macedonian kaval and other woodwinds including clarinet, saxophone, and zurla. Originally from Gostivar, Macedonia, he immigrated to California in his youth. He holds a degree in ethnomusicology from UCLA and is currently pursuing a law degree. His musical interests include Balkan folk music traditions, Byzantine Orthodox chant, and near-eastern folk traditions. He serves as the Director of the Balkan Ensemble at the non-profit Sounds Like LA in Santa Monica, leads the LA-based Balkan band Carsija, and is a frequent contributing artist with Mezecina.
