Dayna Kurtz, the New Jersey born vocalist/writer/musician/producer (now dividing her time between New Orleans and the mountains of Vermont) has earned awards including Female Songwriter of the Year by the National Academy of Songwriters. Norah Jones and Bonnie Raitt have raved about her in interviews, and she's performed on such high-profile radio shows as World Cafe, Mountain Stage, NPRs Morning Edition, and Tell Me More. She's toured with and opened for the likes of Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson, Mavis Staples, Rufus Wainwright, B.B. King, Dr. John, Richie Havens, Madeleine Peyroux, and the Blind Boys of Alabama. Dayna has performed at wide-ranging festivals, including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the French Quarter Festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Brooklyn Americana Festival, and Roots on the Rails. With her warm and dark voice, Daynas singing is deep and dramatic, on songs that include folk, alt-rock, blues, pop, and even cabaret jazz. Her strong, soulful guitar work underpins the arrangements. Those drawn to the darker shades of Tom Waits and Amy Ray will find much to admire in her music. With vocal comparisons to Nina Simone and a musical style that pulls from jazz, blues and country, Dayna has found some of her best success in Europe. She has a loyal following in Germany, Spain and Holland. In Holland, she is seen as part of the very popular Americana genre. In Germany, she is considered a jazz artist and in Spain she is looked upon as an Indie rock musician. Its all good with Dayna this is the way she functions within music anyhow. Labels never define her freedom is her only style sheet.
