5th Annual Silent Film Performance  The Monster (1925)

This Halloween, step into the shadowy world of early cinema as we present the 1925 silent horror-comedy classic The Monster, directed by Roland West and starring the incomparable Lon Chaney, known as The Man of a Thousand Faces. Blending eerie suspense with comic charm, The Monster is one of the earliest films to bring the mad scientist in an abandoned asylum trope to life, setting the stage for decades of horror storytelling to come.

In this chilling yet humorous tale, Chaney portrays the sinister Dr. Ziska, a diabolical doctor hiding in a deserted sanitarium, where he conducts bizarre experiments with the help of his grotesque assistants. When a local man goes missing, amateur detective Johnny Goodlittleplayed by comedian Johnny Arthurtakes on the case. What unfolds is a deliciously twisted mix of fright and laughter, all wrapped in the grand spectacle of silent-era filmmaking.

To heighten the drama and bring this vintage classic vividly into the present, three outstanding musicians will provide a fully improvised live score:

Rasaan Hakiem  Organ

Marquise Bradley  Clarinet

Thomas Giles  Woodwinds (Piccolo, Flute, and Saxophone)

These gifted artists captivated audiences last year with their hauntingly inventive score for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This season, they reunite to weave an atmospheric tapestry of sounddark, whimsical, and utterly unpredictablethat will carry the audience into the heart of The Monsters strange and terrifying world.

Join us for this hauntingly unforgettable evening of music and film, where the brilliance of live improvisation meets the magic of silent cinema.
