Saturday, June 7, 2014 9:00am - 9:30am Check-in 9:30am - 12:00pm Workshop
In these days of social networking and high speed technology, more and more teens and young adults today are becoming addicted to their screens. This is particularly problematic for individuals on the autism spectrum who are isolated, have difficulty forming relationships, and/or lack in-person social opportunities. Also, computers, the internet, and video gaming can offer the opportunity to engage with others where options are otherwise limited. And they are fun! This Saturday morning workshop will explore the following:
* When does gaming or internet use become overuse? How to identify the warning signs, behaviors, and symptoms of overuse and addiction.
* And what are the risks of excess technology use and the implications for individuals with autism?
* What are the inherent reinforcements for video gaming and internet use?
* Why is everything we caution parents about more crucial for individuals on the spectrum?
* What are some tips to help and some basic interventions? What are ASD appropriate options?
