An Evening with MaSango: Music from Zimbabwe & Southern Africa
MaSango: a world renowned, award winning multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, bandleader and producer Zivanai teams up with the vibrant and multi-talented Helen to form this dynamic duo. They bring you sounds from Zimbabwe and Southern Africa as well as the wider African Diaspora.
Zivanai, or Zi as he is known to his friends (everyone!!) - welcomes his audience with his kind words, soulful vocals and masterful guitar playing. His humble demeanor belies his heavy weight status on the African and American music scenes. From the stadiums and music halls in Zimbabwe to the Hollywood Bowl, Central Park Summer Stage, The New York Blue Note, Dimitrou's Jazz Alley, Red Rocks, and everywhere in between, Zi has toured the world shaking stages with legendary artists such as Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Cliff, Habib Koite, Hugh Masekela, Giovanni Hidalgo, The String Cheese Incident, Bushman, Playing for Change, The Motet, Jyemo Club and many others.
Helen Masvikeni - Masango is a multi-talented individual with a diverse background spanning continents and industries. By day, she assumes the role of a literary agent, nurturing emerging voices and fostering literary excellence. Helen is also the owner of a thriving business that specializes in African jewelry, apparel, and household goods. Alongside her business ventures, she shares her passion for African culture by teaching dance, enriching the community with her vibrant spirit and expertise. Helen is recognized internationally for her prowess behind the lens, capturing the beauty of life through her photography. Her images serve as visual catalysts for conversations about topics ranging from identity and diversity to justice and empowerment. Whether capturing the resilience of individuals facing adversity or the beauty of cultural heritage, Helen's work is a testament to the transformative power of art.
Adding to her multifaceted talents, Helen is also a vibrant member of bands MaSango, her duo with Zivanai, and Zimbira, a 10-piece Afro-fusion band. MaSango and Zimbira perform traditional music from Zimbabwe and Southern Africa where Helen contributes her talents as vocalist, dancer and percussionist. Her involvement in the bands not only showcases her cultural roots but also highlights her passion for music and performance, further enriching her diverse portfolio of artistic endeavors.
