LANGUAGE OF THE COSMOS
The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) Performing Arts Division (PERF) welcomes selected commissioned artists and youth development organizations who will share their work and knowledge as part of Language of the Cosmos in June 2025 at Taxco Theatre in Canoga Park. Language of the Cosmos celebrates the intersection of art and science through a partnership with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA/JPL). Selected artists and organizations will come together for this second annual weekend of performances, community workshops, and multimedia installations inspired by the wonders, sounds, and visuals of the cosmos.
DCA invited Los Angeles area performing artists of theater, music, dance, poetry, and media arts to engage with in the creation of new works or the reimagining of existing ones. The commissioned artists are: Maya Billing, Richard Cabral, Masha Dowell, Marisa Hamamoto, Reginald B. McKinley, II, Beth Peterson, Gabriel Spera, Amir Whitaker, and Zawadi Cultural Collective.
NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory was founded in 1936 and has a rich history of encouraging, cultivating, and nurturing artists. NASA/JPLs scientific exploration of the Earth, solar system, and beyond has served as a resource for artists to unlock creativity and communicate the inspiration of science through nonconventional methods.
Projects will be presented at the Taxco Theatre in Canoga Park, a neighborhood with a long history of supporting the NASA space program.
The culmination of works will be presented at the Taxco Theatre Friday and Saturday June 27 and 28, at 7:30 p.m.
UPDATE: The youth and family presentation originally scheduled for Sunday June 29 at 3:00 p.m. has been postponed until further notice.
