Women Songwriters in the Round@Shaker and Vine
Women Songwriters in the Round @ Shaker and Vine
In the spirit of  Portland's community of brilliant creators of song, Women Songwriters in the Round is a monthly concert series whose mission is to gather, promote, and share the "crème de la crème" of  Pacific Northwest female songwriters with an ever-expanding, supportive and appreciative audience.  With it's great wine list, and comfy-cozy atmosphere, Shaker and Vine is a hip, unpretentious, unassuming yet unmistakeable wine shop and lounge in the heart of Inner Southeast Powell Neighborhood in Portland, Oregon.  This is a marriage that will likely last a long, long while.

Artist lineup for April:
Mel Kubik
Stephanie Schneiderman
Darka Dusty

This format involves three or four songwriters seated in a semi- circle and taking turns singing their own songs, adding comments about the music  and occasionally accompanying each other instrumentally and on harmony vocals.

Mel Kubik:

Inspirationista, Muse-Wrangler, Singer of Stories, Writer of Songs, Ivory-Tickler, Sax Empress, Host of the Women Songwriter in the Round series at Shaker and Vine.

This ubiquitous Pacific NW singer-songwriter, pianist, saxophonist, producer and composer is a rare combination of sass and sensitivity. Stylistically, she easily walks through walls and establishes herself solidly in ANY genre she chooses.

Her melodies are set in any style that the lyric is calling for, be it sultry southern rock, early jazz, goth, country, ambient, or something you'd expect to hear in a French cafe. Her voice captures your imagination and permeates your inner world long into the night after you've stopped listening. This is a journey worth taking.

Though she has lent her innumerable talents and skills to countless others, and she remains a member of 80's pop band, Quarterflash, she is offering her newest SOLO venture under her OWN name, showcasing her artistry as songwriter, singer, pianist/multi-instrumentalist, storyteller, and consumate entertainer...occasionally collaborating with masterful guitarist and pedal steel player, Christopher Woitach.

She currently has 3 CDs in her personal discography, "Pigeon," her first and critically acclaimed solo CD (on Swallowhard Records), "Jungle Nights" with the Shanghai Woolies (on American Gavabun Records), and her current new release "Naked Songs" (for Screamin Tornado Music).

Mel has produced CDs for NW artists Nicole Campbell ("Little Voice") and Donna Jose ("On The Road With Buddah's Cat"), and co-composed "Kinji Suite" with native American artist, Arlie Neskahi for the Third Angle New Music Ensemble.
You hear her voice regularly on the air on commercials for "Goodwill" and "Subway," among others.

Her long and strong collaboration as composer and pianist with Marv Ross (of Quarterflash fame) landed her PAMTA awards for Best Original Score and Best Musical Theater Director for her work on the critically acclaimed musical,
"Ghosts of Celilo".

Stephanie Schneiderman:

Trying to pin down Stephanie Schneiderman to any one genre, talent or discipline is next to impossible. One thing is clear however- whether pursuing her prolific work as a solo artist, as member of the all star roots pop act Dirty Martini, stepping on the stage in the musical The Full Monty or producing a wildly successful humanitarian concert series for refugees in Uganda (raising over $70k), Stephanie Schneiderman is hands down one of the most diversely talented artists the Northwest has to offer.

She follows up her 2011 ambient/trip-hop album, Rubber Teardrop, (released on Dan Reed's UK-based label)) with an acoustic CD release, Live at the Old Church. It's a departure from her most recent work with electronic producer Keith Schreiner, with Schneiderman stripping away the layers and bringing her songs back to their organic nature. Playing piano and guitar, as well as featuring 45th Parallel String Quartet, her latest offering satisfies fans with the simplicity of showcasing her songs and voice in their naked and raw form.

Since her solo career began with a coveted spot in the Lilith Fair, Stephanie has earned extensive NW radio play, a devout following and multiple appearances with some of the nations top touring acts- including Aimee Mann, Hall & Oates, Heart, Train, Pat Benatar, Chicago and more. With seven solo recordings under her belt - plus two releases with her collaborative band, Dirty Martini, Schneiderman has seen her music placed in numerous films and Primetime TV shows, as well as toured the world. Her latest live album gives fans the core essence of her songwriting, and delivers a spellbinding live performance that old and new fans will revere.

"A confident singer boasting a collection of torchy techno pop in the vein of Zero 7 or Morcheeba the result is a polished album that feels fully realized and amplifies the drama and sophistication." - The Washington Post

"Shoegaze goddess Stephanie Schneiderman and her delightful trip-hop/folk The songs are obscurely beautiful as they drift over electronic beats will absolutely drop you to your knees... This is human experience in the greatest musical sense imaginable. This is good stuff."
- Crappy Indie Music Blog

Darka Dusty:

Darka Dusty is a versatile, powerhouse singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist living in Portland, Oregon. Born in Detroit, to Ukrainian parents, Darka focused on Ukrainian music as a young adult and began recording and touring the world with her former partner as part of "Darka & Slavko." This genre-busting pop duo quickly achieved international attention and were invited to travel to Ukraine for the first non-Soviet Ukrainian Pop music festival where they won "Best International Band." After recording several albums in Ukrainian and in English in their own recording studio in New York City, the duo broke up and went their separate ways, until they were musically reunited for an historic concert in 2012 in New York.

Darka is thriving in Portland, OR, performoing as a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, as a solo artist and with several bands in Portland: Currently, Darka is co-musical director, singer, keyboardist and accordionist with The Vulva Underground, an all-female musical collective. She also leads an international "world music" band called Kafe Metelyk, as well as an experimental project called Mammoth in Space, with her partner Miri.  She is often seen sitting in with various bands around town as a singer, keyboardist or accordionist. She and her partner Miri are avid music producers and have produced songs and records for musicians around town.

Darka conceived of and produced a collaborative project and fundraising record called "Church of the Get Down" in 2008, where she coordinated over 50 musicians, raising several thousand dollars for Pendarvis Farm (site of the Pickathon music festival).

When she is not making music, Darka helps art direct photo shoots for "Mirifoto" the photography company she runs with her partner, photographer Miri Stebivka. She is also a regular contributing writer for PDX magazine and Daily Horoscope.com.
