The Year of Magical Thinking, a play by Joan Didion
The Transformational Arts Project is proud to present Joan Didion's acclaimed theatrical adaptation of her award-winning, bestselling memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking. The one-woman show, directed by Ed Gangner and featuring Maggie Yowell, will open April 12 at George: Center for Community in Seattle, Washington.
The New York Times called Didion's memoir "an indelible portrait of loss and grief...a haunting portrait of a four-decade-long marriage." After writing the book, Joan Didion transformed the story of the sudden and unexpected loss of her husband and their only daughter into a poignant and powerful one-woman play. The play begins, "This happened on December 30, 2003. That may seem a while ago but it won't when it happens to you...and it will happen to you."
Maggie Yowell is co-founder of the Transformational Arts Project and Resident Drama Therapist and Mental Health Counselor Associate at George and the Center of Saint Andrews. She also serves as a Creative Arts Therapist in the Geriatric Psych Unit of a local hospital. Ms. Didion's play resonated with Maggie, who is particularly drawn to working with grief, loss and trauma. In playing the role, Maggie draws upon her own experiences of loss and grief, including the death of her former husband, her first and longest love, on March 17, 2014. Maggie will be offering an 8-week grief and loss support group with Suzanne West, Chaplain and Spiritual Director, beginning the week of April 21st.
