Steel Magnolias, a live stage production.
The next show for 63rd Street Productions, Inc., is Steel Magnolias, a comedy/ drama by Robert Harling. Revolving around Truvy's Beauty Parlor in Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana, Steel Magnolias is the story of a close-knit circle of friends whose lives come together there. The play begins on a Saturday morning as Shelby Eatenton and her mother, M'Lynn, come into the salon to get their hair done, in preparation for Shelby's wedding that afternoon. As if the wedding wasn't enough, story to hang a plot on, Truvy has also just hired a new stylist, Annelle, who, it turns out "has a past." Also an integral part of that Saturday morning is Truvy and M'Lynn's close friends and neighbors, Clairee Belcher and Ouiser (pronounced "Weezer") Boudreaux. M'Lynn is contending with all the details of Shelby's wedding, but also with a husband who's set on scaring off the birds in their yard where the reception will be held by firing long volleys of shots from a large caliber pistol. Clairee is adjusting to fairly recent widowhood, and Ouiser reveals that she's been in a bad mood for the last forty years. The two acts of the play take place over two years and are a warm celebration of friendship, Southern style. These six "magnolias" show through laughter and tears that sometimes flowers are expected to carry weight that may only be supported by pure steel, but periods of pain and heartbreak are always juxtaposed with good times and humor. In addition to his play, Harling wrote the screenplay for the 1989 film version of the show, starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis and Darryl Hannah, the film has also become a classic.
