Kalashraya Dance Festival
The "Kalāshraya Dance Festival" celebrates soloists in Indian classical dance.  This specially curated event brings together several of the leading younger talents on the Indian classical dance scene today.  The festival provides a platform for these outstanding performers to showcase the best of Indian classical dance.  This year's festival aims to introduce the Washington, DC area to artists from around the United States and India.  

This year's invited artists:

Parul Shah is an internationally acclaimed Kathak dancer and choreographer whose work is expanding the classical medium beyond cultural boundaries.  With a dedication to excellence, Parul preserves the form's aesthetic integrity while developing a unique and powerful vocabulary.  Behind Parul's work is decades of rigorous Kathak training under the world-renowned guru and choreographer, Padmashree Kumudini Lakhia.  As one of her top students, Parul has internalized Ms. Lakhia's vision and focused on revealing Kathak's soulfulness and possibilities.  With an M.A. in dance education from Columbia University specializing in Indian classical movement, Parul has been teaching Kathak in the pure form for over 20 years.  She has presented her solo and group works at major venues around the world.  Visit www.kathakdance.com for more information.

Kaustavi Sarkar is recognized as one of the leading exponents of Odissi of her generation.  She is currently a student of Guru Ratikant Mohapatra and was initiated into the world of Odissi under Guru Pausali Mukherjee.  In addition to receiving awards such as "Singar Mani", "Nalanda Nritya Nipuna", and "Odissi Jyoti", Kaustavi is a choreographer, dance-scholar and educator, and a researcher at the Ohio State University.  She has been performing and teaching at a professional level for well over a decade.  Kaustavi is an Indian national fellow working on meaning-making processes in dance studies as pertaining to South Asian dance.  She is appointed as the Artistic Director of the Multicultural Center for Embodied Aesthetics, International Outreach and Social Activism at the Ohio State University.  Kaustavi regularly presents her scholarly work as well as her creative work in dance conferences, festivals and conducts master-classes/lecture-demonstrations across universities in Europe and North America.  Currently, Kaustavi teaches Odissi at the Ohio State University where she is pursuing her doctoral studies in critical dance studies.  Visit www.kaustavisarkar.net for more information.

Rinku Bhattacharya Das is a Manipuri dancer and choreographer based in North Carolina.  She has received 20 years of rigorous training in Manipuri dance under the legendary Guru Bipin Singh and is working to promote Manipuri dance internationally under the guidance of Guru Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri.  In addition, ever since winning the prestigious Indian national dance scholarship from West Bengal Governor B.D. Pande at age 5, she has pursued rigorous training in Kathak dance under Guru Laxmi Narayan and Guru Parveen Gangani of New Delhi.  She has performed all over India and the USA, receiving various awards and recognitions such as the Indian National Scholarship, 2013 "Naatya Saradhi" award from the International Dance Festival in India, "Heritage Award for Excellence in Classical Dance", and 2013 "Ella Pratt Fountain Emerging Artist Grant" from Durham Arts Council.  Rinku is also the Founder and Director of Nrityajyoti Dance Academy in Kolkata and North Carolina and serves on the Board of Directors for the Indian Classical Music and Dance Society and Indian Talent Discovery Foundation in North Carolina.  Visit www.rinkubdas.com for more information.

Meda Hari, one of the senior most students of Acharya Choodamani Smt. Anitha Guha, is hailed as an upcoming Bharatanatyam artist.  She has been under the tutelage of her Guru since 1997 and had her arangetram (debut) in 2001.  She is a graceful dancer and was adjudged "Miss Elegance" by Carnatica Creative 2003 when she was just 12 years old.  Medha is an empanelled artiste with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and India World Cultural Forum (IWCF).  Endowed with a wiry frame, she dances with lot of passion.  Medha excels in both nritta and abhinaya for which she was awarded the "Lakshmi Viswanathan Endowment award" from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha for the year 2013.  She was conferred "Nrithya Nakshathra" by Maham Parampara in October 2013.  Her other awards for Best Dancer include  Indian Fine Arts (2008), Sur Singar Samsad (2009), Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha (2010), and Spirit of Youth series of The Music Academy - second (2013).  She has performed in solo and group performances all over India and abroad.  She has participated in pivotal roles in over 15 group productions.  Medha is also a faculty member of her Guru's dance school Bharathanjali in Chennai, India.  Visit www.medhahari.com for more information.
