Good alignment and physical stamina are crucial for developing vocal technique and meeting rigorous performance schedules. Often a singer with sensational talent, musicianship and passion finds their technique unnecessarily limited by less-than-optimal alignment, oxygen consumption, or other fitness issues. Opera companies' growing focus on appearance often leads singers to radically change their body composition without consideration for how weight loss or muscle gain impacts the voice. Singers need the means to optimize alignment and stamina while ensuring their workouts improve, rather than compromise, vocal function.
Voice Teacher Claudia Friedlander is certified as a personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. In this presentation she will discuss the specific fitness needs of singers, how the body adapts to athletic training, describe assessments for postural imbalances and oxygen consumption, and propose a fitness regimen tailored to the results of these assessments designed to help singers meet both their vocal and aesthetic goals.
