The Lion In Winter
Center Stage is proud to present the academy award winning play The Lion in Winter by James Goldman as its first production of the 2014 season. The play opened as an award winning movie in 1968 starring Peter O'Toole, Katherine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins, and Timothy Dalton. One of the greatest plays written in modern times it deals with the ancient royal family of Henry II of England, one of England's greatest kings; his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine whom Henry imprisoned ten years before; his sons: Richard, the Lion Hearted, Geoffrey, and John who eventually became the hated King John whom the English Barons forced to sign the Magna Carta; The conniving King Philip II of France; and his sister Alais, long time lover of Henry. They are all brought together for Christmas at Chinon Castle in France in 1183. Henry had conquered half of France by then. Henry's manipulations of his sons, wife, lover, and French foe are masterful, but not without repercussions. This royal family may have invented the condition known as "Disfunctional Family". This is a roaring great drama, with comic elements, and many lines to make us all give pause in thought as their problems are just as true today for families as they were in 1183. The actors are: Daniel Clymer.as Henry, Mary Ellen Kirby as Eleanor, Tristan Ross as Richard, Michael Woodings as Geoffery, Brian Hensley as John, Scott Cook as Philip, and Elizabeth Neilsen as Alais. It is directed by Sally Dunlap. The play opens at Center Stage Community Theatre, 604 Powell Street, Lebanon, IN 46052, on February 28 and runs until March 16, 2014. Performances are every Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm and every Sunday at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors (60+) and students. This play is not recommended for children under 12.
