St. Nicholas and The Good Thief, two early one person plays written by the now much celebrated Irish playwright Conor McPherson, will be performed by former San Francisco based actor Michael McGee and directed by another former Bay Area based stage, film and TV actor/director Scott Paulin,(Berkeley Rep / Magic Theatre and the film The Right Stuff ).
St. Nicholas, is the humorous and romantic story of a pub carousing theatre critic who falls in love with a young actress then starts working for vampires. The Good Thief is the whirlwind tale of a hard-drinking petty thug from the slums of Dublin whose obsession with the wrong woman nearly gets him killed. Call it Dublin Noir, edgy and fast-paced, bullet-riddled, rain-soaked, darkly romantic, sardonically funny, and in the end, deeply moving.
LA TIMES CRITICS CHOICE " Scott Paulin's superbly staged revival stars Michael McGee. McGee's perfectly inflected cadences sweep us up in McPherson's signature combination of Irish gift for gab and intricate, tightly paced narrative form." Philip Brandes
LA WEEKLY - NOMINATED BEST SOLO PERFORMANCE "..a standout revival by director Scott Paulin. McPherson's tinkering with the vampire myth is a clever literary sleight of hand, but the ease of his narrative and its animated density, the shades of humor and poignancy, and McGee's textured performance make for a terrific outing." (Lovell Estell III)
BACKSTAGE - CRITIC'S PICK! "... All of helmer Scott Paulin's choices here make sense.... McGee spins the tangled tale and keeps us captivated and thoroughly convinced " Dany Margolies,
ONLINE REVIEWS -Cynthia Citron "If you want to see acting at its very best, then you must see Michael McGee's extraordinary performance... Director Scott Paulin does a dynamite job of directing."
ARTSINLA "Our storyteller in this solo show doesn't do characters. He doesn't show slides. In the hands of performer Michael McGee, he enthralls with words. McGee seems to see and hear everything he recounts. So does the audience...This is not to say director Scott Paulin seems absent. Far from it, he gives shape and seasoning to the monologue.... " Dany Margolies ArtsinLA
