High prices, low reinvestment and increasing innovation in the Permian Basin
Josh Dixon, Senior Research Analyst @ Wood Mackenzie
Abstract:
Oil prices skyrocketed past $100/bbl this year, but unlike in past price cycles, Permian activity has only increased modestly. Higher oilfield services costs, fixed capex budgets and supply bottlenecks have all limited growth. So, when should we expect the dynamics to change? And how are some operators turning some of these challenges into opportunities? Produced water management, in particular, has made strides in recent years to reduce operating costs and cut emissions while increasing throughput capacity. If oil prices remain high, and reinvestment rates remain low, innovations like this will be more critical than ever.
Bio:
Josh joined Wood Mackenzie in 2021 as a senior research analyst in the Houston office. Since joining the company, Josh has worked on projects characterizing US unconventional oil and gas plays including the Marcellus, Wolfcamp and Bone Spring. In 2022 he has led research into induced seismicity and produced water management in the Permian Basin, and how these factors affect E&P activity in the region.
Prior to joining Wood Mackenzie, Josh worked as a geologist and subsurface technical specialist for bp America in Houston. At bp, he served as a technical consultant for several global exploration and production projects in both conventional and unconventional settings. Josh worked on a product development team where he advised in the development of digital tools for the subsurface organization.
Josh holds a PhD in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin and an a combined Masters and Bachelors degree in geology from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
