Holistic Orchard Care Workshop with Michael Phillips
The Philadelphia Orchard Project and Bartram's Garden are bringing orchard all-star Michael Phillips to town to lead this exciting learning opportunity, which will cover the basics of holistic orchard care and demonstrate hands-on pruning techniques for healthy fruit trees. His orchard, Lost Nation Orchard, is part of a medicinal herb farm in northern New Hampshire. Michael's book, "The Apple Grower," is available in a fully-revised edition, along with a new exciting companion volume, "The Holistic Orchard," that covers organic growing methods for all fruits. Host site Bartram's Garden is the nation's oldest botanic garden and home to POP's largest orchard planting in the city of Philadelphia. EVENT SCHEDULE:
HOLISTIC ORCHARD TRAINING: HOME ORCHARD BASICS, 9am-12:30pm Successfully growing fruit for your family becomes straightforward when you narrow the big picture down to getting the basics right. Fungal disease becomes manageable with wise variety choices and enhanced biology. Even major insect challenges can be resolved safely and organically when you perceive who, what, and when. Confidence to integrate tree fruits into your landscape begins with embracing biodiversity and knowing how to build system health. The challenges you face at your locale will become far more manageable as you build a holistic system that keeps trees and berry plantings healthy from the get-go. BROWN BAG LUNCH: 12:30-1:00pm We'll provide some beverages and snacks, but we ask that you bring your own lunch to keep the costs of this training at an affordable level.
HOLISTIC ORCHARD TRAINING: COMPETENT PRUNING, 1pm-4pm This hands-on training session will demonstrate the essential techniques and principles of pruning on the fruit trees at Bartram's Garden. Competent pruning is an important annual practice for maintaining orchard production. Michael will discuss specific horticultural goals to keep in mind when deciding which limbs and shoots to remove: sunlight interception, strong branch structure, this year's fruiting prospects, tree calmness, and canopy renewal. You'll see the results of appropriate cuts from the perspective of light space. This afternoon session will also double as a walking consultation with our holistic orchard expert.
