Leading in Tough Times
Leading in Tough Times
In a tough economy, good judgment, critical thinking, and leading by example and inclusion are crucial skills in ensuring the sustainability of nonprofit organizations - including Social Venture Partners!
Join SVP partners from around the network in Phoenix on April 23 for an exploration of contemporary leadership and convening practices and how these contribute to building teamwork, aid collaboration efforts, strengthen your SVP and enrich the work you do with nonprofit organizations.
This Peer Learning session focuses on strategies that support the creation of a leadership culture where partners share responsibility, innovation comes from all corners of the organization and problems are solved collaboratively. But, it is not an academic exercise. Leading in real time is part of our model, so we will roll up our sleeves and discuss the biggest challenges we're facing this year and use shared learnings and experience to both address current situations and better understand how leadership development integrates into our efforts.
Who should attend?
This session is one part of an initiative to highlight leadership as a fundamental aspect of all the work (and play) we carry out in SVP. Any partner who is actively engaged in the SVP mission will add to the dialogue, as will staff and invited guests from investee organizations.
Goals
Convene partners & staff for a deep conversation about leadership development in the SVP model.
- Personal leadership: a practical look at the qualities of a highly effective leader in SVP
- Coaching tactics: ways we might embed leadership into our SVP culture, supporting partners as they assume new roles
- Challenges & opportunities in governance, strategies for sustaining our organization, investing in and engaging with nonprofits, working in the community, growing ourselves as philanthropists, partnering with other funders

Leadership
"Leadership" is a concept we often resist. It seems immodest, even self aggrandizing, to think of ourselves as leaders. But if it is true that we are made for community, then leadership is everyone's vocation, and it can be an evasion to insist that it is not. When we live in the close-knit ecosystem called community, everyone follows and everyone leads. Even I,a person who is unfit to be president of anything, who once galloped away from institutions on a high horse,I have come to understand that, for better or for worse, I lead by word and deed simply because I am here doing what I do. If you are also here, doing what you do, then you also exercise leadership. Parker Palmer, Leading From Within
