SASS: La Llorona
Join us for our next SASS (Sonoma Academy Student Show), La Llorona. This show, entirely student produced, will be our first-ever show staged entirely in Spanish!
The legend of La Llorona, Spanish for the Weeping Woman, is a folktale that has been a part of Hispanic culture since the days of the conquistadores. The weeping spirit is said to be that of a young peasant woman who was blessed with natural beauty and long flowing black hair, who fell in love and became pregnant with the child of a wealthy man from a neighboring city. When he later left to marry another, leaving her alone with their child, she was so despondent that she drowned herself and her child in a river. Because she killed her child and committed suicide, her soul is lost in purgatory, and she must spend eternity searching for the soul of her lost child. In her never-ending agony, she wanders the shores of rivers and lakes in the dead of night, weeping and crying. Many are said to have heard her cries. The legend says that she wears a white gown and veil, and as she roams, she searches for children to drag to their watery graves. Is the folktale true.....or is it a story mamas tell their children to keep them from swimming at night?
All guests must RSVP in advance and provide proof of vaccination (including booster) or negative Covid test (PCR taken 72 hours in advance or antigen test taken within 24 hours) and masks will be worn throughout the event.
