Inhospitable to Trafficking Training
PRE-REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS NOW CLOSED. PLEASE REGISTER AT THE DOOR WHEN YOU ARRIVE.
INHOSPITABLE TO TRAFFICKING Traffickers are using all types of lodging establishments to profit from the sexual exploitation of vulnerable youth and adults. Victims in Spokane County have been found in economy motels and luxury hotels, in outlying areas and in our downtowns. Unfortunately, no hotel is immune from this crime. The crime impacts hotels by posing safety risks, legal risks, and risks to property and reputation.
TRAINING BENEFITS BEST's recommended practices for making lodging establishments Inhospitable to Trafficking have been created and vetted with the help of hospitality leaders, hospitality attorneys, law enforcement officers, prosecuting attorneys, and service providers. Leaders in Spokane County have met over several months to adapt practices for the specific needs of our community. The training is divided into two parts:
1:00 to 2:15pm: Introductory Training for Hotel Staff, Hotel Managers/Owners, & Law Enforcement Officers Learn about sex trafficking in Snohomish County and how it involves lodging establishments. Learn to recognize indicators of trafficking and prostitution in lodging establishments. (Hotel personnel are instructed to report observations to management.)
2:15 to 4:30pm: Advanced Training for Hotel Managers/Owners & Law Enforcement Officers Learn what number to call for a law enforcement response, how to encourage a timely and discrete response, and what to expect if law enforcement intervenes. Protect guests and staff from unnecessary suspicion of wrong-doing by learning steps to take before contacting law enforcement. Learn to easily establish brand-appropriate policies and practices to mitigate legal risks. Learn what information hoteliers can share when law enforcement initiates any type of criminal investigation without a warrant. Gain resources for educating hotel staff and law enforcement officers about human trafficking. Receive training to access a secure, members-only website for sharing real-time information about suspected criminal activity before it travels into your hotel or your community.
While this training is focused on sex trafficking prevention, the knowledge and resources participants will gain will help to prevent and address a much broader spectrum of crimes.
WHO MAY ATTEND? The Introductory Training is designed for all hotel employees and law enforcement officers. The Advanced Training builds on the Introductory Training. It is designed for law enforcement officers and owners and managers of lodging establishments, especially those overseeing functions of the hotel impacted by human trafficking, including: General Manager(s) Security Manager(s) Front Desk Manager(s) Housekeeping Manager(s) Bar/Restaurant Manager(s) Other Hotel Employees BEST recognizes the sensitive nature of this issue, the training is only open to lodging establishments, law enforcement, and BEST-designated attendees.
