Not By the Book - Dr. Tawfik Hamid
Join the Charleston Library Society in welcoming Dr. Tawfik Hamid, Senior Fellow and Chair for the Study of Islamic Radicalism at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, as he discusses the mind of the jihadist in "Fighting Terrorism in Brain-istan". Dr. Hamid is an Islamic thinker and reformer, and one time Islamic extremist from Egypt. Dr. Hamid's work focuses on providing a fresh and theologically valid interpretation of the Quran to counterbalance radical teaching. Dr. Hamid has appeared on shows spanning the spectrum from CNN to Fox News, and his articles and op-ed pieces have appeared in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Times, the New York Daily News, Voice of America, and the Jerusalem Post. Dr. Hamid's knowledge of the jihadi mindset has caused him to be invited as a guest speaker at private and governmental fora around the world such as the Pentagon, DNI, NSA, European Parliament, and others .He also testified at the US congress. Hamid has a unique insight into the minds of radical terrorists and hopes to share ways in which we can positively influence their way of thinking and end their violent actions. He also received Speaker of the Truth award of the Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET). Dr. Hamid has a medical degree in internal medicine and a Master's degree in cognitive psychology and educational techniques. He is the author of the book Inside Jihad.
Dr. Hamid's recent Facebook page (in Arabic), Modern Interpretation for the Quran, provides a peace-promoting commentary and understanding for the Quran. The page has garnered over 750,000 "Likes" from an Arabic speaking audience in only the few months since it began in May, 2013.
