Event
Stämbandet Newton Jul Concert
Enjoy the magic of a Nordic Yuletide as Scandinavian vocal ensemble Stämbandet and a few young Lucia friends perform songs reflective of the season.
This journey through the holiday season, which in Scandinavia lasts from the First Day of Advent through Twelfth Night, includes songs from Finland, Denmark, Norway, and medieval Europe. It also features Swedish music, dance, and a Saint Lucia procession - a tradition in which one girl designated as Saint Lucia wears her crown of candles in a procession of light and song on the darkest day of the year.
Other highlights include a guest appearance of a Swedish Tomte (Sweden's version of Santa Claus) and a holiday reception (with some Scandinavian goodies) following the concert.
We hope you will join us in Newton for this dose of Nordic cheer.

Founded in 1978, Stämbandet (http://stambandet.org) has a reputation for excellence both as an a cappella ensemble and a World Music vocal group. Presenting songs rarely heard outside of Iceland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Sweden, this captivating vocal band often breaks into six- and seven- part harmonies sung in six languages. Led by Allen LeVines, musical director since 1985, Stämbandet performs a wide range of a cappella folk traditions unique to Scandinavia, including "trall" - singers imitating fiddlers playing dance music - a practice that has been compared to scat singing.
