Saturday Visitation and Funeral Services in Detroit
Rev. James L. Meyer May 6, 1934 - February 1, 2021
Detroit, Michigan
Rev. James L. Meyer, aka Jimeyer, age 86. Son of the late Matthias and Alice Meyer. Attended St. Mary of Redford grade school and Sacred Heart Seminary high school and college, and St. John's Major Seminary. He was ordained on June 5, 1960. He served at Sacred Heart Church in Dearborn and St. Benedict of Waterford. He was Chaplin at Children's and Hutzel hospitals for 29 years.
Jim received his Masters degree in Foreign Relations and Government in 1969 from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and Government. He received his JD Law degree in 1973 from The Detroit College of Law.
Jim is survived by his sister Mary Meyer Neff. He is the brother of the late Sr. Jean Meyer, IHM and Robert L. Meyer. Throughout his ministry, Jim was a spiritual counselor, a mentor, a teacher and a special friend to very many adults and children. He was a long-time friend to the Timlin Family and a mentor to Aaron Timlin. He was a grateful friend to his caregivers Marianne Burrows and Connor Meddles. To 3 year old Isaac Matthew James Timlin he was affectionately called "grandpa."
Jim's ministry included children with cystic fibrosis which led him to create The Chalfonte Foundation whose mission is "To provide spiritual, psychological, recreational, financial and educational support for children, youth and other individuals and families in need." The Foundation provides an array of activities throughout the year that cater to kids and families in need. The goal is to create a sanctuary of acceptance where people can step back from their lives, experience something new, reflect and renew.
Jim was: a fierce advocate for peace and justice for all people; a peaceful prostester of injustices; a comforter to the sick and dying; an ardent environmentalist who always practiced what he preached; a stanch advocate for the City of Detroit living there himself in a Midtown loft; an avid competitor in his social activities such as cards but especially backgammon. His homilies, though lengthy, were based in spirituality applied to daily life.
In his lifetime, Jim touched so many people through his ministry, his outgoing personality and his generous spirit. In his final days, Jim was the humble recipient of hundreds of loving messages and grateful remembrances. Jim will be deeply missed, but his influence will last for generations.
The family will receive friends Thursday (Feb. 11) 2 -7 PM at the A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks, Troy 48084.
