Cowboy Mouth

The title "Cowboy Mouth" comes from the Bob Dylan song, "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands." The sad-eyed lady with the cowboy mouth is assumed to be Joan Baez, who in turn sang of Dylan, "Singer or Saviour, it was his to choose." In this play, Sam Shepard and Patti Smith spin a poetic yarn, elevating themselves to the level of their generation's mythic artists, while scratching away at the boundaries of fact and fiction.

As the play begins, Cavale has kidnapped Slim with an old .45 claiming that she wants to make him into a rock-and-roll star, but instead they fall in love. What follows is yearning and striving, moments of transcendence and emotional trainwrecks, fits of imagination that touch the divine and dreams that seem to overshadow reality.

The play is directed by UW Professor Jeffrey Fracé (who directed Once Upon a Time 6x in the West, and Harp Song for a Radical), and features UW Drama seniors Hannah Ruwe and Spencer Hamp as Cavale and Slim.

The running time is 1 hour.
