The Modern Maker: MENS DOUBLET WORKSHOP
This is an intensive hands-on workshop devoted to the cut and construction of a man's early 17th century doublet. Students will observe the drawing out of a man's doublet directly onto the cloth, demonstrating a historical tailor's required knowledge and skills. (Paper patterns were not used in this era.) After the demonstration garment is cut, students will be divided into three groups of 5 people who will work as mini tailoring teams. Each team will be given a pre-cut garment to construct entirely by hand, with step-by-step descriptions and demonstrations of the various stitches and threads to be used. Students will make swatches for each stitch to take home with them. All tools and materials will be provided. All students are invited to photograph their team's work, in order to retain visual references for the application of the stitches. There will be a 1 hour lunch from 1:00pm-2:00pm, with a variety of sandwiches and soda provided. Students with specific dietary restrictions should feel free to bring their own lunches. The teams will be consolidated at the end of the day and the class will contribute to the finishing of at least one complete garment. Other completed garments will be available for study. The hosts have three cats. The event may be videotaped for Mathew's future use. By purchasing a ticket, you consent to be shown on the video.
