Happiness Initiative Leadership Training
Our Agenda for Happiness Initiative Leadership Training week-end: Starting the day with mindfulness 30 minutes; 8:30-9:00 am We will start the day with meet-and greet time and sharing of tea, coffee and treats. There will be an option to practice mindfulness together before the training begins.
Happiness Talks: a lesson in action - We will start the day with formal introductions to each other and goal setting for the training. This is followed by the happiness talk with the aim that participants walk away able to give a talk. Pointers will be given at critical junctures so participants learn how to effectively engage and enliven an audience. The session includes an exercise conducted in pairs and concludes with a group discussion.
Lunch - 1 hour Lunch is served. Informal discussion.
How to Conduct a Happiness Initiative: the nuts and bolts We will go over the logistics of conducting a happiness initiative and using the Gross National Happiness Index. This includes team building, timelines, subjective metrics, including the need for subjective metrics, and review of wellbeing surveys, objective indicators, happiness report card writing and levels of data analysis, conducting outreach to immigrant and refugee and other underserved peoples, conducting town meetings, projects and policy changes & final comprehensive report writing. Practical application is emphasized, with lessons learned from past happiness initiatives shared by the instructor. The session is interactive, with the needs and requirements of the class guiding the direction of the training. A practical exercise followed by group discussion with the aim of sharing experiences and knowledge finishes this session.
Who, What, How, Where and Why: the Global Happiness and Wellbeing Movement This session will cover the science, policy and civic actions behind the happiness movement. We will review activities at the governmental level in Bhutan, the UK, Brazil and France. We will delve into the science that supports this movement, and provide resources for the participants use. The importance and need for subjective metrics will be explored. We will then survey the various NGOs in the EU and the US active in the GNH movement. This session will be tailored to the goals and needs of the group and include discussion of practical application by the participants at junctures through the discussion
Day one wrap-up and what makes for a movement: We will take a short break and finish the day with a discussion about the important points as they fit the goals of the participants and a discussion about the three ingredients for a movement. "Homework assignments " aimed at provoking thought and discovery will be given.
Day Two: 9 am (8:30 optional) noon

Your happiness story - We will start the day with each participant giving a short presentation about their own "path to happiness." The goal of this presentation is to set the foundation for meaningful messaging and strong movement building.
Compassion, Altruism and Happiness: exploring the link This section includes interactive presentations and discussion about the link between personal happiness and social change. This will be followed by a short presentation on positive psychology and personal happiness The session will end with a focused discussion on integrating compassion and altruism into a happiness initiative.
Raising Awareness We will look at one model for raising awareness about the importance of happiness used in Seattle in collaboration with the Make It Happy Foundation. This section will give the steps for the model. We will discuss other models and risk management in awareness raising.
Lunch - 1 hour ; noon 1 pm Lunch is served. Informal discussion. .
Happiness Policy Tool We will view the group's Gross National Happiness Index scores and discuss the groups results, other groups results and how this data can influence people and policies. An overview of the policy screening tool will be given, with examples, followed by use of the policy screening tool for a decision or project by the participants. This session will end in a discussion about the status of the happiness movement.
Wrapping up Happiness We will conclude the session with a recap of the discussion about makes for a movement. Each participant will speak to their experience during the training and plans for the future.
