Visit MANITOGA, the House, Studio and Woodland Garden of pioneer industrial designer, Russel Wright (1904-1976). Tour Dragon Rock, Wright's experimental home which he built onto the rock ledge of an abandoned quarry while masterfully orchestrating the surrounding landscape into a series of outdoor rooms of varying character and delight.

PLEASE NOTE  Parts of the Tour qualify as a MODERATE HIKE including a 40 stone-step ascending stairway and an inclined foot path to access the sound installation iForest. Both are without rails or hand holds.

THE TOUR EXPERIENCE

Visitors follow the upper Quarry path to enjoy stunning views of the Quarry Pool, House and Studio. An ascending stone stair leads to a mountain laurel grove and the exquisite moss rooms. Visitors cross a majestic waterfall over a wood plank bridge and proceed into the woodlands to experience the sound installation iForest within Wrights theatrical setting of towering boulders and framed views of the Hudson River Valley. Once at Dragon Rock, interiors are defined by expanses of glass, innovative materials use, and seamless connections to outside terraces. The Tour concludes by following a stepping stone path over the Quarry Pool dam back to the Visitor/Guide House.

As part of the 2020 Artist Residency program, Manitoga presents, through September, Pete M. Wyers iForest - twenty-four audio speakers feature a 72-voice choir singing primarily in the indigenous Mohawk language a western response to the Mohawk Thanksgiving Ceremony. Through mid-November, artist Anne Lindberg's luminous large-scale drawings cycles of seeing will be on view in the main House. Lindberg's palette of thousands of colored parallel lines will transition from cool to warm as summer becomes fall at Manitoga, reflecting concerns of time, sequence and causality.
