After the Curfew [Lewat Djam Malam] (Indonesia, 1954)
WEST COAST PREMIERE
Originally released in 1954, After the Curfew (Lewat Djam Malam) was directed by Usmar Ismail, generally considered to be the father of Indonesian cinema. The film was recently restored by the World Cinema Foundation and the National Museum of Singapore, and was screened at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
The film, starring A.N. Alcaff and Netty Herawati, follows a young revolutionary as he tries to find his way in life now that Indonesia has won its independence from the Netherlands. The film brings up the many strands of hope and disillusionment that followed the end of the Indonesian revolution, and explores what happened to the revolutionary spirit and the enthusiastic dreams for a new society that were supposed to unfold with the end of the Dutch colonial era.
Presented by Southeast Asian Film Society. Supported by Center for Southeast Asia Studies, UC Berkeley and Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia, San Francisco.
