Physical Performance and Fire Testing of the First Fiberglass Window Wall
Presented By:
Cascadia Windows Ltd.

Our world desperately needs every part of society to work towards mitigating climate change.  Achieving energy conservation in buildings is our industrys contribution, and its hugely important.  Regulators across North America are introducing new and increasing stringent energy standards to rapidly move our industry towards highly efficient buildings.  Building enclosures are a primary target for these improvements.

This presentation introduces a significant technological response to this challenge of energy performance.  It is the worlds first fiberglass window wall.  Fiberglass combines the strength and long life of a reinforced composite with exceptionally low heat loss.  The result achieves the efficiency we need, without giving up the glazing area and the views that we want.

Our industrys scramble for efficiency  as important as it is  must not lead us to shortcut the care and diligence of testing; the true demonstration of both performance and safety.  A commercial fenestration system can be subjected to this testing on a very large scale, and the first fiberglass window wall met this challenge.

In the presentation, learn how large-scale Performance Mock-Up testing subjects a window system to air, water, structural, horizontal movement, vertical movement, thermal cycling, and seismic drift testing, where each tests residual effects compound on the test specimen while the next tests proceed.  This leads up to a finale that mimics the movement of a high-rise tower during a massive earthquake.

Then, learn how more large-scale testing  this time with fire  was performed to develop the scientific evidence behind an upcoming code change that expands the safe use of combustible window systems in non-combustible construction.

Learning Objectives:
-Develop awareness of recent local and regional changes in building energy efficiency codes.

-Understand the significance of the lowest versus highest thermally performing building envelope assemblies on whole-building insulative performance.

-Discover what favorable economic trade-offs and net construction savings are now possible from using high performance building envelope components.

-Understand the sequence, extent, and rigor of large-scale physical performance testing on highrise glazing systems.

-Understand the scientific evidence that formed the basis of an upcoming building code change that expands the safe use of combustible fenestration in non-combustible construction.

Presenter:

Michael Bousfield Technical Representative of Cascadia Windows & Doors
Cascadia Windows:  27050 Gloucester Way, Langley, BC
Email:  mbousfield@cascadiawindows.com

Michael Bousfield is one of the most well-versed technologists in fiberglass window and door technology in BC.

In 2005, Michael attended BCIT to prepare for a career shift from logistics to architecture and building engineering.  Two years later, he entered the full-time BCIT program of Architecture & Building Engineering Technology, specializing in Building Science.  He completed this program with honours, and was awarded BCBEC/BCIT Building Science Award for his academic achievements.
During his studies at BCIT, Michael also worked for RDH Building Engineering as a building science technologist.  He performed forensic investigations into building enclosure failures, designed rehabilitation programs, and performed field review and testing for large-scale new and rehabilitation construction projects.

In 2009, Michael pursued the opportunity to focus his technical knowledge and experience in building science to a specific sector of the industry  windows.  He is now the Technical Representative of Cascadia Windows and Doors. At Cascadia, Michael blends two distinct roles  marketing, and technical development.

The blend of these roles allows Michael to serve clients and consultants in a technical sales role, and also to serve Cascadias own team by directing internal technical development, testing, and engineering.
