Grand Slam 2020 at Rain City Poetry Slam!
Poets have been competing all year through qualifying rounds to earn a spot on tonight stage! Nine poets will be competing, going three rounds with poems judged by five random members of the audience.
At the end of the night, the top four poets will be our official 2020 Rain City Poetry Slam team who will represent us at the International Poetry Slam in Dallas in August, and at the Bigfoot Regional Poetry Slam at Portland in June!
Our show is all ages, but please take note that the night's performance may contain adult language and themes. Strobe effects will not be used. The Fremont Abbey is accessible by a ramp.
Tonight's show will feature a spotlight performance from poets from YouthSpeaks Seattle. Since 2003, Youth Speaks Seattle has been the citys premier collective for youth spoken word poetry, creating avenues for youth voices through creative writing instruction and performance opportunities. Over the years, Youth Speaks Seattle has conducted residencies and visited classrooms in nearly all of Seattles public high schools, hosted a thriving monthly open mic series, transformative all-city writing circles and explosive poetry slam competitions.
The featured poet for our 2020 Grand Slam is Tim "Toaster" Henderson! Toaster is the Co creator of Big Kid Slam. He has performed at every level of poetry slam, becoming the Grand Slam Champion of Berkeley (2012) and Mental Graffiti (2016), a finalist in the Individual World Poetry Slam (2016) and the National Underground Poetry Individual Competition (2014). Hes facilitated rap, graffiti and poetry workshops across the US for over a decade and recently accepted a Teaching Artist Fellowship with Young Chicago Authors. Toaster has been featured on many media outlets including: Button Poetry, All Def Digital, Sofar Sounds, National Public Radio and SF Weekly. If youd like to learn more about Toaster, ask his mom- she put a scrapbook together.
