Benda Bilili 2011 (PG rating)
About the Film "In Lingala, Staff Benda Bilili means "put forward what is hidden" or "look beyond appearances"."
The film features a group of musicians, many of whom have a disability, as they make music on the streets of Kinshasa. The film follows the group as they record their first studio album and make their way towards fame in Europe.
Since the film was made, management disagreements have seen the group split, but some members have gone on to critical acclaim. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/may/14/mbongwana-star-from-kinshasa-review https://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/feb/15/staff-benda-bilili-where-did-it-go-wrong
[in Lingala and French with English subtitles] [The screening is rated PG meaning that some scenes may be unsuitable for some children and parental discretion is required]
Why was it chosen for the series? This film was suggested by one of our attendees. It is a film about the power of art to sustain the spirit if not the body. It is also about the economics of the global music industry in the west. We can learn as much from talking about what went wrong as what went right. What comes through in the end is the incredible psychological strength of people who have learned the value of their own artistry. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the continued contribution disabled artists make to the music industry around the world.
Access awareness This film deals with difficult experiences of street homelessness including some violence, there is mention of domestic violence and the political situation in DRC.
About the location Screenings are in the Engine Room on platform one. Doors open 6pm, film starts promptly at 7pm with a discussion to follow. There is a wheelchair accessible entrance but please let us know if you have any questions about access. Screening will be shown with subtitles.
About the series In an age of intolerance, in which we seem to have forgotten the skills needed to live with people who are different from us, this film series is an opportunity to relearn them. Each screening will be accompanied by conversation, snacks and refreshments.
