Notans or gray value drawings are a great way to establish depth, a focal point and a map for color. A limited grayscale forces you to evaluate your scene. By creating a value tone drawing first (instead of starting with color), you have a map of where darks and lights should be and establishes your focal point. Now you can just put down color knowing that your composition will work. Learning goals: 1.How easily and quickly Notans can be created and how much they will ease the experience of drawing a scene. 2.How easily you can change the point of view by changing where you put darks and lights (contrasts and similar values). 3.Experiment with color and gain an understanding of how colors compare with their corresponding gray value. 4.Create drawings using Notans as a road map, and substitute dark hues for dark values and light for light.
