Limiting the colors you use for a watercolor scene creates a sense of unity and adds a distinctive mood in your sketch. Any three colors combined can create a nearly infinite number of diverse hues, which still magically all speak with each other on the paper. We will explore different structures of three-color relationships to focus our compositions and push understanding of the transparent watercolor medium. Using unexpected colors can bring new life to a mundane scene. Students will be encouraged to dip into the neglected paints in their palettes. The instructor will demo techniques, show relevant works, and go over basic color theory before guiding the class in sketching exercises exploring different color relationships. We will make at least one developed painting by the end of the session.
Learning goals: * Develop a full, dynamic range of values and tones with just three colors. * Learn color theory structures (analogous, split complementary, triadic) which create different moods. * Describe different objects through warm/cool relationships, rather than literal interpretation of color. * Mix colors on the paper by layering transparent washes, along with other watercolor techniques. Supply list: Required: * 2 - 3 sheets of high-quality watercolor paper (above student grade, 140 lb. recommended), cold or hot press, about 9x12 * A variety of brushes, including at least one larger brush for covering large areas quickly. * Watercolor palette of choice, ideally filled with fresh paint (feel free to bring along tubes). * Water cup and water. * Miscellaneous watercolor setup for urban sketching (paper towels, etc.) * Graphite pencil for rough sketching
