SPE Permian Basin - Panel Discussion - Mar 17 2020
Petroleum Club of Midland Mar 17, 2020 11:15am to 1:15pm
Join us on March 17th for a panel discussion on the technical and economic fundamentals of Unconventional Resource Plays.
Below are the panelists:
Scott Lapierre, Shale Specialists
Scott graduated with a BSc. In Geology from the University of South Alabama in 1995 and began his oil career working offshore as an LWD field engineer in the Deepwater GOM. In 2005 he joined ConocoPhillips and became a petrophysicist. When the gas shale revolution erupted in 2006, Scott worked diligently to develop interpretation techniques for quantifying and mapping the hydrocarbon content of shales. In 2009 Scott moved to Pioneer Natural Resources to help lead their transition into liquids-rich shales where he further refined his hydrocarbon quantification and mapping techniques. Scott ultimately played a key role in transitioning Pioneer into a major horizontal operator by mapping OOIP for Wolfcamp Shale and promoting its significance to Executives and Board members. During a post-mortem investigation of an underperforming shale oil prospect he previously promoted based on OOIP, Scott discovered the Secret to shale oil production. He identified the primary source of mechanical energy driving oil production to the surface from within an SRV was, in fact, the well-known, underappreciated mechanism of oil-phase expansion. After learning how to predetermine and map available recovery factor upfront, Scott recognized that once combined with OOIP, the Mother of all treasure maps could be generated: Recoverable-oil-in-place. Scott left Pioneer in 2014 to further exploit his new mapping capabilities. At a time when everywhere was awesome and overpriced, Scott and several colleagues pitched their unique capability to delineate the true, highest recovery core of a shale oil play. They successfully raised $100MM from private equity and created PCORE Exploration and Production (I). In just 18-months they had successfully acquired core acreage in one of Americas hottest plays; drilled 3-top performing wells; and divested their asset realizing a 133% IRR and 3.2x ROI. Since 2016, Scott has been consulting under the banner of Shale Specialists LLC where he uses his 7-year old secret to provide solutions for predetermining optimal well spacing and to help clients generate more reliable forecasts.
Duc Lam, P.E. USI Tech
Duc founded USI Tech after gaining more than ten years of industry experience in reservoir engineering working for Apache Corp and Hess Corp. He began his early career with Apaches engineering development program, and later joined Apaches Corporate Reservoir Engineering group where he worked Corporate Reserves and Business Development focusing on Anadarko Basin, Permian Basin and Canada. He also held various positions of increasing responsibilities in Hess's New Venture and Business Development across China, Williston Basin, Canada and Permian Basin. He holds a BSc with Honors in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University and is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Texas.
Stephen J. McClaine, PE, Hickman McClaine & Associates, Inc.
Steve McClaine is the President of Hickman McClaine & Associates, Inc. (HMA), a consulting reservoir engineering firm located in Midland, Texas. HMA specializes in resource evaluation, field development studies, waterflood design, enhanced oil recovery design, management advisory services, and litigation support. Prior to becoming president of HMA in 2015, Steve worked for the firm as a reservoir engineer for five years. He has 40 years of industry experience as an engineer with various independent oil and gas companies and consulting reservoir engineer firms.
