What do you know about Hong Kong? How about its relationship with mainland China?

Hong Kong is part of China but maintains its own political system, currency and identity. Hong Kong, a city of almost 7.5 million people, was a British colony for more than 150 years. In 1997, Hong Kong became part of China once again. The Hong Kong Basic Law ensures that it keeps its unique system of government which guarantees freedoms not available to those on Chinas mainland, including the right to protest, freedom of the press and freedom of speech. Previously, Chinas government had stated it wouldnt interfere with Hong Kongs democratic nature but in recent years has reinterpreted the Basic Law and said they have total jurisdiction over the city.

Join Ed Cabrera as he talks about democracy making a last stand in Hong Kong, China exerting its power through its proxies in this land once ruled by the British, and China slowly forgetting promises made to the people of Hong Kong as the ruling Communist Party tries to erode rights.

You will learn how we arrived at this point, starting with a short history of British Colonialism there. We will spend more time looking at the latest issues in contention between Hong Kong and China, especially the many sides waging the battle and the timeline of recent events.

For the highlight of this presentation, you will see an anatomy of a protest showing the events of an evening with the protagonists involved at center stage of those events.

Finally, Ed will talk with you about the possible outcomes for this clash that seemed inevitable.

Ed Cabrera has taught at Atascadero High School and, before that, at Perris High School (in Southern California). He also coached numerous sports and advised even more clubs in his career spanning 4 decades.
