split bill - Shayla-Vie Jenkins, Elena Demyanenko, Paul Matteson
split bill Shayla-Vie Jenkins, Elena Demyanenko, & Paul Matteson mother tongue / welter / how many times Friday & Saturday, March 20-21 at 8pm Icebox Project Space 1400 N American St. Philadelphia, PA 19122 484-324-8498
"mother tongue" is a solo meditation on mothering and darkness, born out of an improvisational conjuring of Shayla-Vie Jenkins matriline. It continues a love and study of M. NourbeSe Philips epic collection of poems, "She tries her tongue; Her silence softly breaks". https://www.uarts.edu/node/42428
In "welter", conceived and directed by Elena Demyanenko, simultaneous solos emerge out of prolonged work with color. Infected by color virus and noise making, they evoke an invocation, resulting in a non-symbolic account of desire and its power. Made with and performed by Demyanenko, Chloƫ Engel and Laurel Jenkins. Sound/Creative advising by Jon Kinzel. www.elenademyanenko.com Vimeo trailer of welter https://drive.google.com/file/d/18LKYcqAYxeXik9tpLvQm3vhqui2Cfol2/view?usp=sharing
"how many times", a new quartet by dancer-choreographer Paul Matteson, draws from childrens books of courage and Early Buddhist chants to create an intertwining world of dance and story. Visual artist, Rosalyn Driscoll, hangs translucent sculptures within the space that, like the performers, explore the fragility of birth and becoming. Performed by Sydney Donovan, Brandon Graf, Matteson and Andrew Smith. www.paulmatteson.com https://www.instagram.com/paulmatteson_/
