David Boyle at Givins Beverly Castle
In 1991 David Boyle took over his ailing father's job as church organist & choir director. This solo show is a workplace confessional that explores twenty-five + years of sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant interactions with the congregation.
"I was raised Catholic so the stories and songs from the Catholic tradition felt familiar to me, but whatever your tradition, these well-told stories will move you, tickle your funny bone, and make you wonder at the accidentals of this thing called life." Cherryandspoon.com
"Hitting his pace like the writer of book you just can't put down, Boyle crafts his stories from vivid, sensory observations of the details that make an ordinary experience memorable. Boyle's tales reveal a well-developed discipline of structure that would hold up to even the driest analysis. Though to an audience, they just seem fascinating." The Elgin Review
"At turns hilarious, thought-provoking and touching, he is a wonderful story-teller who showed his mettle even before he got into the meat of the show... The audience hung on every word...--Pioneer Press, Minneapolis
"The piece as a whole is a well-wrought mix of wit, cussedness, close observation and earned emotion."--Chicago Reader
Givins Beverly Castle provides an exquisitely intimate South Side concert experience, with parking on-site.
On the top of a hill, on the far South Side sits an ancient castle. Understandably, because it is the city's only castle, it has long held a special place in the hearts and memories of those who have called the Beverly neighborhood home.
Tickets can be purchased at the door one hour prior to the performance.
