El Lobo y La Paloma, The Film
El Lobo y La Paloma, The Film

The original, live performance of El Lobo y La Paloma was created by flamenco dancer Lindsey Bourassa in artistic collaboration with dancer Megan Keogh, Canadian-Iranian painter Khosro Berahmandi, Kuwaiti singer Talal Alzefiri, and oud player Thomas Kovacevic. This live performance was documented in 2018 and then recreated on film in 2019 by Maine filmmakers David Camlin and Scott Sutherland.

The work integrates the symbolism of the wolf (el lobo) and the dove (la paloma) as understood through cross-cultural understandings of animal symbolism. Wolves are regarded as spirit teachers and pathfinders, those who face their death with dignity and go into the unknown to gather knowledge to then guide their pack. The dove is a symbol of the maternal spirit messenger who comes to lead her children safely from struggle and to guide their spirit onward. In El Lobo y La Paloma, the wolf embodies any departed, displaced being; the dove represents reunited ancestry and she who guides the sufferer out of suffering; the griever grieves in order to heal; the music guides our healing.  Inspired by the loss of Bourassas father in 2015, El Lobo y La Paloma strives to honor the universal experience of loss, to highlight the reconstruction of our relationship with our lost one through the grieving process, and to foster a conversation about the importance of grief as vital to healing.

SPECIAL NOTE
The film will be followed by a brief presentation by grief and bereavement educator Carol Schoneberg of Hospice of Southern Maine, as well as a Q&A with filmmakers and performers.
