Cultural Conversation with Emmanuele "Manou" Phuon
Baryshnikov Arts Centre
New York, NY
Share this event:

Join us for a performance and discussion with choreographer and dancer Emmanuèle (Manou) Phuon (ACC 2009, 2015). The performance, "When Kumbhakar Swallowed a Dead Dog,", part of Manou's requirement for her Master of Fine Arts in Dance degree, takes inspiration from two Cambodian theatrical traditions, Sbek Thom (shadow puppet theater) and Lakhon Khaol (classical dance). Both traditions draw on themes from the Reamker, the Cambodian version of the Indian epic, the Ramayana. Ms. Phuon takes these traditions and proposes a contemporary visual and choreographic approach to an ancient tale.

Ms. Phuon is a French-Cambodian artist based in Brussels and New York. Her training began with the Royal Ballet of Cambodia and the Conservatoire National de Dance dAvignon. She has since performed Elisa Monte, Martha Clarke, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Yvonne Rainer (ACC 1970), and many more.
