Sunset Hill Kansas City Barbecue Competition
Porter County Parks and Recreation is very excited that you and your team will be joining us for the event, we are eager to put this event on the map as being one of the best BBQ events in Indiana. We sincerely hope that your participation in the event will be a positive experience. We have a maximum of 30 team spots available!
Check-in will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 15th. There are assigned spots for each team, you must check in first. Space assignment will be given upon check-in at registration. There will be signs directing you to the registration and competition space upon arrival to the park. Meat inspections will begin Friday at 10:00 a.m. and end by 4:00 p.m. Please call or email to arrange late check-in and meat inspection. Information to leave at home for family: Porter County Sheriff non-emergency phone # is 219-477-3000. Address of site 775 N. Meridian Rd., Valparaiso, IN 46385 Cooks meeting will be Friday evening at 5:00 PM inside the maintenance garage (tan building with the green roof you cant miss it). Meat judging will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday May 16th. Chicken 12:00 p.m. Pork Ribs 12:30 p.m. Pork shoulder/butt/picnic 1:00 p.m. Brisket 1:30 p.m. Presentation of awards will begin at approximately 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 16th. If possible we will announce if we are able to do awards earlier.Total Prize Purse is $5,000. At 25 teams another $1,000 will be added. At 29 teams another $1,000 will be added. If we have all 30 teams an additional $500 will be added for a potential Prize Purse of $7,500. Grand Champion: $1,000 Reserve Champion: $750 3rd Overall: $400 4th Overall: $225 5th Overall: $125 Chicken, ribs, pork and brisket categories as follows: 1st place: $250 2nd place: $150 3rd place: $100 4th place: $75 5th place: $50
Total: $5,000
We will be providing trash, ash and grease disposal. Please do not mix these items. All disposal containers will be clearly marked. There will be no dumping of ashes, or grease on the grass or any hard surface. There will be no gray water disposal provided, please provide your own disposal containers. There is an address for a dumpsite provided below. Please be prepared to provide 50 to 100 feet of heavy-duty extension cord to bring electricity to your spot. Reminder, electricity is limited to 20 amps per team. To ensure we can provide electricity to all teams, no more than 20 amps will be provided. If you need more than 20 amps you will need to bring your own power supply. IF YOU NEED ELECTRICITY PLEASE EMAIL! We will be able to be flexible on the 20 x 30 space requirement. IF YOU NEED MORE SPACE FOR YOUR SET-UP PLEASE EMAIL. You will be assigned a numbered space once you confirm your space and electricity needs. You will be expected to be considerate of adjoining teams and stay within your assigned space. Additionally, excessive parking around your area is prohibited, please be courteous and move all vehicles to designated satellite parking areas.
Water will be available via spigots drawing off of our well. We will be doing our best to run hoses as needed. Please bring connectors and extra hose, or fill up your containers prior to arrival. Due to the limited number of spigots in our Park, we will allow direct hookup. Please be advised that many lines might be split from the same source so water pressure may vary. Please email if you need a direct hookup to water!
No unauthorized golf carts, UTVs or other motorized vehicles allowed. All pets must be leashed at all times in the park. Restrooms will be available but are a little bit of a walk from the competition area (no shower facilities). Port-a-lets will be located throughout the competition area.
Please share all the rules with members of your team. Directions to Sunset Hill Farm County Park 775 N. Meridian Rd., Valparaiso, IN 46385 From either Interstate 80/94 or Interstate 90: Exit at State Road 49 and head south. Exit State Road 49 at U.S. Hwy. 6 (Porter Hospital will be on your right). Take U.S. 6 west to the first stoplight (Meridian Rd.). Turn left at Meridian Rd. (Luke Gas Station at the corner). Entrance to the park will be on your left. From the South: Take State Road 49 north to U.S. Hwy 6. Take Hwy 6 west and follow directions above. Photo Policy: Staff and volunteers from Porter County Parks take pictures during events and programs. These pictures can be used for future publications.
