Song of the Shadows
Moving from the joy of Christmas to the triumph of Easter makes it all too easy to forget that the action pointing the way to new life begins on Good Friday in the shadow of the cross. The music and words of Song of the Shadows walk us through the valley of the shadow of death with Jesus as he embraces the cross. And as the shadow of that cross musically is cast forward into the present it offers rest and shelter for those grown weary of the journey. In the cross' shadow we can discover, or rediscover, our faith by developing our "night vision," learning to trust God to be our guide. The cantata is an experiential affirmation of the truth, in composer Joseph Martin's words, that "wherever there are shadows, there is light." Come walk together for awhile in the shadow of the cross with other United Methodists and friends from the Spokane area. Worship will embrace mission as we financially support Shalom Ministries whose clientele live in the shadows of the alleys and doorways of our city. They are often homeless, addicted, unemployed, broken, and hurting. Through the feeding ministry of Shalom they know they are loved and not forgotten.
