Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe at the Carco Theatre
Bradford Farwell recreates an 1849 literary salon featuring the master poet, critic and father of
the detective novel, Edgar Allan Poe. This inter-active presentation is set during the last months
of Poes brief life as he toured the country in an effort to woo subscribers for a new magazine of
his own creation, The Stylus. These speaking engagements range from intimate conversations to
public lectures, where Poe would recite his work and share his views on the state of American
literature, the philosophy of composition, and the most noble of professions  that of the poet.
He was also known to devote entire lectures to the deriding of Longfellow, Emerson, and the
other incorrigibly arrogant bumpkins we find in New England. This diatribe would typically be
followed by a letter praising Longfellow in an effort to convince him to submit poems for the
many magazines Poe edited during his career. He was at once charming and destructive.
Farwell explores the cultural context of the time and Poes personal history which greatly
influenced his most famous works. His brilliant performance reflects Poes life-long battle for
recognition in a young nation struggling to define its own literary history and voice.

dramatic, engaging and perfectly executed.
