Eliot Property Indigenous Peoples Outing & Picnic with Ecological Historian Arthur Dawson
Buckeye Knob, located on the east side of Sonoma Mountain, is a privately- owned property and forever protected through a conservation easement donated to the Ag + Open Space District by the property owners. The 52-acre property is located on a highly-visible, south-facing hillside and includes grassland, oak woodland, and the lush upper canyon of Carriger Creek.

Glen-Ellen based Dawson, a regional historian and ecologist who has served on the board of the nonprofit Sonoma Mountain Preservation (SMP) for several years, coordinated and wrote the central text for Where the World Begins: Sonoma Mountain Stories and Images, will lead the hike and discuss the mountainside through the lens of history.

Hikers will explore the canyon first, and then climb to the top of the knob for a picnic while enjoying a spectacular view of Sonoma Valley, the Mayacamas, and San Pablo Bay. Following our picnic, we will return back through Buckeye Knob.

This is an intermediate level hike with some steep ascents and descents. We will hike approximately 3-4 miles, and there are some elevation gain and very uneven footing. There is no charge for this outing, which is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the work of  Ag + Open Space with a quarter-cent sales tax.
