Rivertown Shakedown featuring Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, Charlie Parr, and Dead Horses
Fall draws near, our breweries brew from Shandy to Oktoberfest beer, but don't shed a tear, just think of friends you hold dear, thoughts that run strong as Wisconsin River water after the snow melt. Summertime may have come to pass, but alas, we have a chance to allow for a reflection of the past and a dawning of another memory worth a grin or a chuckle. Come one, come all, he's and she's, come as you please, to a Rivertown Shakedown that is liable to weaken your knees, or maybe even bring you some peace.

Horseshoes & Hand Grenades (10:40-1:00)
In 2010, the five Wisconsinites that today make up Horseshoes & Hand Grenades found themselves in a living room in the college town of Stevens Point, WI, holding acoustic instruments and enjoying a hodgepodge of fermented beverages. Music ensued that evening and while many of the party guests eventually bid their goodbye well into the morning hours, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades wasn't ready to let the get-together fade.
Three years later, the music still hasn't stopped and the party is still going strong, from the mountain west to the river towns of the midwest that the quintet calls home.

Early open mic performances at a central-Wisconsin country bar called the Northland Ballroom led to other shows and the band began to realize their love for playing music together and traveling to new places and new people. As the band continued to perform regularly on weekend nights, while also hanging out and picking at parties and get-togethers just about any night of the week while attending school, a sound began to form that was reflective of the musical influences of the individuals that make up the group. While strongly rooted in bluegrass, old-time, and folk music, the band produces a sound that draws on the vaults of music collectively or individually enjoyed through the course of their lives thus far. The music doesn't lend itself well to definitions or boundaries. One could probably be formed, but the boys seem to generally prefer fishing a river, or enjoying the company of friends and barley beers.

With their music well-defined or not, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades has began to form a place in the midwest music scene, gaining recognition on both a regional and national scale. The band took 3rd place at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival's Band Competition in 2012 and has shared the stage with Merle Haggard, the Infamous Stringdusters, Yonder Mountain String Band, Charlie Parr, the Big Wu, Pert Near Sandstone, and many more. In 2012, the group received a nomination for a Wisconsin Area Music Industry Award in the category of Bluegrass/Americana. The group's recent album release, This Old Town, has been featured on the popular Wisconsin radio show, Simply Folk, as well as other radio shows across the country.

Charlie Parr (9:00-10:30)
Many people play roots music, but few modern musicians live those roots like Minnesota's Charlie Parr. Recording since the earliest days of the 21st century, Parr's heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals don't strive for authenticity: They are authentic.

It's the music of a self-taught guitarist and banjo player who grew up without a TV but with his dad's recordings of America's musical founding fathers, including Charley Patton and Lightnin' Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. With his long scraggly hair, father-time beard, thrift-store workingman's flannel and jeans, and emphatic, throaty voice, Parr looks and sounds like he would have fit right into Harry Smith's "Anthology of American Folk Music."

Dead Horses (8:00-8:50)
Based out of Northeastern Wisconsin, Dead Horses bring a modern approach to American roots music, with a style they've dubbed folkgrass. This 5-piece, comprised of 2 guitars, mandolin, fiddle, and upright bass, combine fine introspective songwriting with some of the best pickers and singers in the Midwest. A versatile live act, the Dead Horses have felt comfortable playing everything from a church picnic to a nudist festival.

The group is led by the sweet voice of singer/guitarist Sarah Vos, who is the winner of the 2013 Upper-Midwest Singer-Songwriter Competition. Their debut 2012 album, Back to Life, got heavy airplay on Wisconsin Public Radio's "Simply Folk". Dead Horses were also nominated for a 2012 Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) Award in the category of Bluegrass/Americana.

Dead Horses have appeared with acts such as Pert Near Sandstone and Big Head Todd and the Monsters, and in 2012 performed on Fox's "Good Day Wisconsin". A truly unique new-age stringband, The Dead Horses continue to impress and awe audiences while becoming a real force on the Midwest folk/jam scene.
