Capella Antiqua - The Rose of Virtue
Capella Antiqua, artists in residence of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, invite you to a concert of Marian music on Friday, Aug 16th entitled, The Rose of Virtue. For the inaugural concert of its 3rd season, the Gentlemen of Capella Antiqua are performing an all men's concert for the first time, in honor of the Feast of the Assumption Mary, which takes place the day before on August 15th. As an ancient feast celebrated in both the West and East, it is one of the oldest devoted to Mary.
The concert will include selections spanning over 7 centuries and music written for both liturgical use and personal devotion. Among the countries of origin are Spain, England, Italy, Germany, France and Russia. Composers include both the well known, including Dunstable, Morales, and Josquin, and the more obscure, names like Sumaya, Lemmens, and Chesnekov. These works will serve as a cultural, spiritual, and musical tour of the rich tradition that has developed throughout the past two millennia in honor of the Blessed Virgin.
A pre-concert lecture will take place at 6:45 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament followed by the beginning of the concert at 7:30 p.m.
