DD Day 2019 presents "Electric Storm 50", an electronic music extravaganza honouring the 50th anniversary of the release of the seminal album "An Electric Storm" on Island Records by the White Noise trio (David Vorhaus, Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson). Cited as the first electronic pop album in the UK, it was a cult album that has inspired many artists since.
This a 3-hour collective workshop exploring surround sound and multichannel techniques to create an immersive, multichannel work inspired by the White Noise album, An Electric Storm. Over the course of the workshop, you will learn techniques in spatialisation, diffusion and sound manipulation to produce a Delia Derbyshire inspired sonic soundscape using audio samples, found objects and more!
Previous DAW experience (Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton, Reaper etc.) is strongly recommended. Participants are invited to bring 5 sounds inspired by the album, An Electric Storm to the workshop (the album is on Spotify and You Tube).
Workshop leader: Emma Margetson is an award-winning acousmatic composer and sound artist currently based in the Midlands, UK. Her works have been performed nationally and internationally, and she creates music and sound for stereo, binaural and multi-channel systems. Emma has delved into the Delia Derbyshire archive and created "Dreaming Waves" - a piece composed for an 8-channel speaker configuration and released on vinyl with The Radiophonic Workshop (band).
Delia Derbyshire's most famous work is her realisation of Ron Grainer's original Dr Who theme. Delia was also a key figure in the White Noise trio. Band member David Vorhaus describes Delia as his "teacher". The album is an excellent example of Delia's meticulous tape manipulation skills and marvelous musicality. "An Electric Storm" was made with no synthesisers! We think electric storm is an evocative and accessible concept, sonically and visually so we hope you will have lots of fun creating your own "electric storm" inspired compositions.
Spirit Studios kindly providing multi-speaker workshop space. This opportunity is supported by Arts Council England.
