DELIA DERBYSHIRE DAY 2019 MCR - EVENING EVENT with live music
DD Day 2019 presents "Electric Storm 50" - an electronic music extravaganza honouring the 50th anniversary of the release of the seminal album "An Electric Storm" on Island Records by the White Noise trio (David Vorhaus, Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson). Cited as the first electronic pop album in the UK, it was personally supported by Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records.
Come and learn more about how this way ahead of its time album was produced and experience new music and art by contemporary artists inspired by Delia's amazing work.
Event outline:
- Premiere of "Electric Storm" audio feature by David Butler, a compilation of interviews with key figures such as Adrian Utley (Portishead) and Cosey Fanni Tutti, about the legacy of "An Electric Storm"; - Talk by David Vorhaus about meeting Delia and making the album; - Panel discussion unpacking the album and discussing its visionary production and legacy with David Vorhaus, Dr David Butler, Caro C, BISHI and Izzy Bolt; - Premiere of 2 new exciting commissions inspired by "An Electric Storm" and Delia's work by BISHI ("working at the cutting edge of art, music and technology", PRS M Magazine) and a collaborative AV piece by Kat Lovell (music/sound) and Izzy Bolt (digital visuals); - DJs Tukatz & PeRiSUU from Reform Radio.
Delia Derbyshire's most famous work is her realisation of Ron Grainer's original Dr Who theme. Delia was also a key figure in the White Noise trio. Band member David Vorhaus describes Delia as his "teacher". The album is an excellent example of Delia's meticulous tape manipulation skills and marvelous musicality. "An Electric Storm" was made with no synthesisers and described as "multi-dimensional" before stereo even existed! We think electric storm is an evocative and accessible concept, sonically and visually so we have commissioned 3 artists to create 2 new works inspired by the albuma and Delia's archive held at John Rylands Library, Manhcester, UK.
This event and Electric Storm 50 project is supported by Arts Council England, Granada Foundation, Musicians Union, Spirit Studios, Sound On Sound magazine and John Rylands Library. For more info go to www.deliaderbyshireday.com
