Originated in 1969 in the Trenchtown area of Kingston, Jamaica, The Mighty Diamonds quickly became recognized as the group with the Motown sound. The trio became friends at school in the mid-60s and were first known as The Limelight. They changed their name after Shaw's mother called them "the diamonds." Their polished choreographed stage shows were modeled after the Motown vocal groups of the 1960s, including The Impressions, The Temptations and The Stylistics.
For years The Mighty Diamonds have been entertaining and educating audiences with their wisdom and gospel of harmony. Their songs have been adored over successive generations and the Mighty Diamonds are still selling out venues worldwide today! Their live show is a journey through the African Diaspora from R&B to dancehall to sweet melodies to roots reggae. Their concert also includes covers of songs from inspirational musicians Bob Marley, The Stylistics, Curtis Mayfield and Alton Ellis.
The Mighty Diamonds trio and live band have toured the world extensively and garnered a strong following in Japan, Europe and the U.S., and Africa. Their native country, Jamaica, forever appreciates and loves The Mighty Diamonds, and they continue to perform at Reggae Sunsplash. They are respected as the premier roots reggae harmony trio still in business, living proof that they were born to create their special music and share it with the world.
Opening this legendary show is the NW's premier live experimental reggae band, DUBTONIC KRU. With musicians trained in Jamaica, and domiciled in the NorthWest U.S. Dubtonic Kru expertly move audiences with heavy basslines, one drop, psychedelic guitar riffs, echoing keyboards and conscious lyrics. Come early and come ready to Rock to the Roots Dub sounds of catchy hits like Sunshine Girl, Born Jamaican, "Overcome" and "99%"
