Through Judeo-Spanish traditional song, Leahaliza Lee brings alive moments from the lives of women silenced in the nearly forgotten history of Spains once-vibrant and long-gone Jewish communities.
Her voice will bring the audience to the Sephardic world music that weaves through East and West, with languages and rhythms that rang through homes and celebrations for centuries. Songs in Hebrew, Arabic, and the uniquely Sephardic language of Ladino will all be featured. Though the songs come from long ago and far away, their themes of finding your place in love, family, and the world remain timeless.
Leahaliza has performed at Carnegie Hall, the New York Jewish Music Festival, Wayne State University Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies, Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan, and the Michigan Festival of Sacred Music in 2016.
Running October 18 - December 1, 2019, the Connecting Chords Music Festival events center around the common convictions and threads that draw our community together the importance of cultural traditions, human dignity, and the increased understanding of various faith traditions.
