Bijayini Satpathy presents: Kalpana
Bijayini Satpathy is one of the foremost practitioners of Odissi dance, best known for her role as the lead dancer of the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble.
In her solo event Kalpana, Bijayini Satpathy re-imagines tradition, weaving narrative and pure movement to highlight joy, longing, and beauty. Her performance combines lithe movement and striking facial expression with skill and athleticism as she executes precise spins, turns, and jumps. She inhabits multiple characters one after the other in turn, casting off each personality with a shift in posture or a side-long gaze. Satpathy's American tour of Kalpana concludes in Atlanta after entrancing audiences at Drive East New York, Drive East San Francisco and in Salt Lake City, South Bend, Washington D.C., and New Orleans.
Odissi is an ancient dance form that originated in the eastern Indian state of Orissa nearly 2,000 years ago and is known for its graceful body movements and sculptural poses. Satpathy has been recognized for her path-breaking transformations of classical technique through her novel interpretations of Odissis movement vocabulary. She has presented her art globally at prestigious dance venues, both as part of the ensemble and as soloist. highlights include performances at Jacobs Pillow, Baryshnikov Arts Center, American Dance Festival, Festival DIle de France, Konark Dance Festival, and several appearances at New Yorks Joyce Theater.
