Lakou Mizik Benefit for HOST with Kevin O'Keefe
The evening will start at 5 pm with a performance by Kevin O'Keefe's Circus Minimus. From Kevin O'Keefe's suitcase an entire circus emerges: tent, band, lights, the boisterous ringmaster Steve Fitzpatrick, the officious Mervin Merkle, the incredible Bumbilini Family, the Magician to the Stars Clyde Zerbini, and Keeferan innocent trying to runaway and join the circus. However, the most important performers emerge from the audience. Each performance becomes a dialogue between the characters and the audience light-hearted collaboration.
A dinner break and silent auction to benefit HOST will follow, and feature Haitian themed specials from the Stone Church Kitchen.
Then at 7:30 Haiti's Lakou Mizik returns to Brattleboro! Haitian music bursts at the seams with joy. Although the country has seen more than its share of trouble and misery in the past decade, its music is defiantly joyful; an act of communal healing; a smiling face against adversity. Lakou Mizik was founded in 2010 in the wake of the Haitian earthquake as just such an act of musical resilience. Described as Haitis Buena Vista Social Club by the New York times, this all-star inter-generational collective electrifies their audience with hours-long concerts that blend the soulful spirit of a church revival, the social engagement of a political rally, and the trance-inducing intoxication of a vodou ritual.
This Haitian Dance Party is also a fundraiser and for Brattleboro's own Haiti Orphanage Sponsorship Trust - Help HOST Help Haiti, whose mission is to support an orphanage of 33 children forever changed by the 2010 earthquake. Co-founded by two Brattleboro educators, HOST is a vehicle of compassion that directly supports the lives of a new generation of Haitians.
