Failure: A Love Story Presented by Westridge Theatre

Mother and Father Fail are the first to meet untimely ends. Their daughters Gerty, Jenny June, and Nelly Fail keep the familys' clock-repair business running. But by the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead -- expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, and leaving behind a brother whose awkward, abrupt exterior obscures a tender heart, and a devoted suitor named Mortimer Mortimer.

Don't worry, none of these plot points are a spoiler. Just as we learn the fate of Romeo and Juliet in the prologue, the details of the Fail family deaths are breezily announced by the CHORUS in the plays opening lines.

From Chicago-based playwright, Philip Dawkins, and first produced in 2012, this innovative play has the rhythms of a short story  with a chorus of actors relaying bits of narration when they're not channeling specific characters. As in life, the pile-up of tragedy is counterbalanced by a surplus of good cheer. With a few tuneful songs, and a relentlessly playful approach, the play manages to tackle age-old themes of mortality, loss, love and to gently remind us to grab hold of life and savor it to the fullest.

In the end, this whimsical, sweetly philosophical play leaves us with the consoling message:
"Just because something ends, that don't mean it wasn't a great success."
